JKSSB Constable Recruitment 2026 Comprehensive Overview

Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB), on behalf of J&K Police Department, has announced recruitment for 669 Constable positions across various specialized categories including Armed/India Reserve Police (IRP), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Telecommunication, and Photographer. This is a significant recruitment opportunity for youth of Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory to serve in the police force and contribute to maintaining law, order, and public safety in the region.

The J&K Police is one of the premier law enforcement agencies in India, responsible for maintaining public order, preventing and detecting crime, and safeguarding the internal security of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. With this recruitment, the department aims to strengthen its manpower and induct young, energetic, and dedicated individuals who can serve with integrity and professionalism.

This recruitment notification, Advertisement No. 14 of 2025 dated 31st December 2025, offers attractive salary as per 7th Pay Commission at Level-2 of the pay matrix (Rs. 19,900 - 63,200), along with various allowances and benefits applicable to J&K Police personnel. The selection process involves Computer-Based Test (CBT), Physical Standard Test (PST), Physical Endurance Test (PET), Medical Examination, and Document Verification, ensuring that only the most suitable candidates are selected for these crucial positions.

Detailed Category-wise Vacancy Breakdown

The total 669 vacancies are distributed across four specialized categories within the J&K Police force. The largest category is Armed/India Reserve Police (IRP) Constable with 421 posts. These constables are deployed for maintaining law and order, crowd control, VIP security, counter-insurgency operations, and handling internal security challenges. They undergo rigorous training in weapons handling, tactical operations, and modern policing techniques.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) category has 66 vacancies. SDRF Constables are specialized personnel trained in disaster management, rescue operations, emergency response, and relief operations during natural calamities like floods, earthquakes, landslides, and other disasters. They work closely with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and play a crucial role in saving lives during emergencies.

Telecommunication Constable positions comprise 174 vacancies. These technical constables are responsible for maintaining police communication systems, wireless networks, radio systems, surveillance equipment, and modern technological infrastructure used by the police department. They require technical knowledge in electronics, telecommunications, and information technology.

Photographer Constable category has 8 vacancies. These specialized constables are responsible for crime scene photography, forensic documentation, evidence collection through photographic methods, and maintaining photographic records of police operations, events, and important documents. They need expertise in photography, videography, and modern imaging technologies.

Category-wise reservation is applicable as per Jammu & Kashmir Reservation Rules including Open Merit (OM), Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Residents of Backward Area (RBA), Pahari Speaking People (PSP), and other special categories as per applicable government orders and court directions.

Educational Qualification Requirements

For all Constable positions, the minimum educational qualification is Matriculation (10th class) pass from a recognized Board. The certificate must be from a Board recognized by the Government of India or J&K Government. Distance education or open schooling certificates are accepted if issued by recognized boards like National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) or J&K State Board of School Education.

For Telecommunication Constable positions, in addition to Matriculation, candidates should preferably have technical knowledge or qualifications in Electronics, Telecommunications, Information Technology, or related fields. Candidates with ITI certificates in Electronics/Telecommunication/Computer Hardware, Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering, or relevant technical certifications will be given preference during merit determination or interview.

For Photographer Constable positions, along with Matriculation, candidates must possess practical knowledge and experience in photography and videography. Certificates or diplomas in Photography, certificates from recognized photography institutes, or demonstrable practical experience in professional photography will be considered advantageous. During the selection process, candidates may be required to demonstrate their photography skills through practical tests.

All educational certificates must be valid and genuine, issued by recognized institutions. Candidates with fake or forged certificates will face legal action and permanent debarment from government services. The marks obtained in the Matriculation examination will be used for merit determination in case of tie-breaking situations.

Age Limit and Relaxation Details

The age limit for all Constable positions is minimum 18 years and maximum 28 years as on 1st January 2025. This is the crucial date for age calculation. Candidates born between 02.01.1997 and 01.01.2007 (both dates inclusive) are eligible to apply. The age proof will be determined based on the date of birth mentioned in the Matriculation certificate, which is the only acceptable document for age verification.

Upper age relaxation is provided to reserved category candidates as per J&K Government Reservation Rules. Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates get 5 years of age relaxation, making their maximum age limit 33 years. Other Backward Classes (OBC - Non-Creamy Layer) candidates receive 3 years of age relaxation, extending their maximum age to 31 years.

Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) falling under specified categories get 10 years of age relaxation for General category, 13 years for OBC candidates, and 15 years for SC/ST candidates. However, the nature of disability must be compatible with the duties of a Police Constable, and candidates must meet the physical standards required for the post.

Ex-Servicemen are eligible for age relaxation up to the extent of service rendered in Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force) plus 3 years, provided they have completed a minimum of 6 months of attested service. Wards/Children of Ex-Servicemen are NOT eligible for reservation or age relaxation under Ex-Servicemen category; this benefit is available only to actual Ex-Servicemen themselves.

Government servants of J&K UT get age relaxation up to 5 years, provided they have rendered continuous service in J&K Government departments. Candidates who have been affected by militancy in J&K may also be eligible for age relaxation as per special government orders issued from time to time. All candidates claiming age relaxation must produce valid certificates from competent authorities.

In addition to basic pay, Constables are entitled to Dearness Allowance (DA) which is currently around 50% of basic pay and is revised twice a year (January and July) based on All India Consumer Price Index. House Rent Allowance (HRA) ranges from 8% to 24% of basic pay depending on the place of posting (X, Y, Z category cities). Other allowances include Transport Allowance, Uniform Allowance, Washing Allowance, and ration allowances.

J&K Police personnel also receive special allowances such as Risk Allowance for deployment in high-risk areas, Hard Area Allowance for posting in difficult terrains, High Altitude Allowance for deployment in mountainous regions, and Special Duty Allowance for anti-insurgency operations. These special allowances significantly enhance the overall salary package.

All measurements will be conducted without shoes. Height and chest measurements are relaxable for certain categories as per government rules. Candidates not meeting the prescribed physical standards will be disqualified and will not be allowed to appear for the Physical Endurance Test (PET). The decision of the Physical Standard Test Board will be final and binding.

Physical Endurance Test (PET) Details

For Male Candidates: Running - 1600 meters to be completed in 6 minutes 30 seconds OR 5 KM running in 30 minutes (event to be decided by the Selection Committee). This is a qualifying test; candidates either qualify or are disqualified based on completion within the time limit.

For Female Candidates: Running - 800 meters to be completed in 4 minutes 30 seconds OR 3 KM running in 20 minutes. Again, this is a qualifying in nature.

The PET will be conducted on a standard running track or measured road course. Candidates must wear proper sports attire and running shoes. Use of any unfair means, proxy running, or assistance during the race will lead to immediate disqualification and possible legal action. Medical fitness certificates may be required before allowing candidates to participate in PET to avoid any health emergencies during the physical test.

Only candidates qualifying in both PST and PET will be eligible for the Computer-Based Test (CBT). The sequence of tests may vary, but typically PST and PET are conducted first to screen candidates on physical fitness parameters before the written examination.

Computer-Based Test (CBT) Pattern

The Computer-Based Test will be objective type with multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The exam will be conducted in online mode at designated examination centers across Jammu and Kashmir. The detailed syllabus, exam pattern, number of questions, total marks, duration, and negative marking scheme will be notified separately on the JKSSB official website at www.jkssb.nic.in.

The CBT will likely cover subjects such as General Knowledge including knowledge of Jammu & Kashmir geography, history, culture, current affairs, famous personalities, and administrative setup; Current Affairs of national and international importance; Reasoning and Mental Ability including logical reasoning, analytical ability, and problem-solving; Basic Mathematics/Arithmetic including number system, percentages, profit-loss, time-distance, averages, ratios, and simple calculations; and General Science covering Physics, Chemistry, and Biology at 10th class level.

For Telecommunication Constables, there may be additional questions related to basic Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer fundamentals, and technical knowledge. For Photographer Constables, questions on photography basics, camera types, lighting, composition, and digital imaging may be included.

The medium of examination will be English, Hindi, and Urdu. Candidates can choose their preferred language. The CBT will be conducted in multiple shifts if the number of candidates is large. Normalization of marks may be applied if the exam is conducted in multiple shifts. Candidates must score minimum qualifying marks (usually 40% for General category, 35% for reserved categories) to be considered for selection.

Medical Examination Standards

Candidates qualifying in CBT, PST, and PET will be called for Medical Examination to be conducted by authorized Medical Board constituted by the J&K Government. The medical examination will assess overall physical and mental fitness to perform the duties of a Police Constable.

The medical examination includes checking of height, weight, chest measurements (re-verification), vision test (normal vision without color blindness - 6/6 or 6/9 with correction acceptable), hearing test (normal hearing without any hearing impairment), cardiovascular fitness (blood pressure, heart function), respiratory fitness (lungs function, any chronic respiratory disease), musculoskeletal fitness (no deformities, varicose veins, flat feet, or other conditions affecting physical performance), and general health assessment.

Specific medical standards include no history of epilepsy, psychiatric disorders, or chronic ailments that may affect performance of police duties. Candidates with communicable diseases like TB, HIV/AIDS, or other infectious diseases may be declared unfit. Any physical deformity, tattoos on visible body parts (except those allowed as per cultural/tribal traditions), or conditions incompatible with police service will lead to rejection.

Female candidates will be examined by female doctors. Pregnant candidates at advanced stages may be given an option to appear for medical examination after delivery, subject to specific guidelines. The decision of the Medical Board will be final, and candidates declared medically unfit will not be eligible for appointment even if they have qualified in all other tests.
