Complete Job Details
Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) Pilani, one of India's most prestigious private technical and research universities, has announced recruitment for the position of Research Assistant. This position is for a research project sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) titled "Preserving and Transforming Family Culture: The Role of Parents in Ensuring Intergenerational Mobility in Metropolitan India." The project is under the supervision of Dr. Madhurima Das from the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences at BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus.
The Research Assistant position is purely contractual and project-based with a tenure of 20 months. This is an excellent opportunity for postgraduate students and researchers in Social Sciences who want to gain hands-on research experience in the field of sociology, family studies, and social mobility. The position offers a monthly fellowship/stipend of Rs. 37,000/-, which is quite competitive for research positions at this level.
The selected Research Assistant will be responsible for carrying out extensive fieldwork and data collection in metropolitan cities of India. The role involves traveling to different locations, interacting with families, conducting interviews and surveys, collecting qualitative and quantitative data, and ensuring proper documentation. The candidate will also be involved in data analysis, using appropriate statistical and qualitative analysis tools, and assisting in the preparation of research reports and academic papers.
The project explores the fascinating dynamics of how family culture is preserved and transformed across generations, and how parents play a pivotal role in ensuring upward social and economic mobility for their children. This research has significant implications for understanding social change in contemporary India and can contribute to policy formulations related to education, family welfare, and social development.
One of the unique benefits of this position is that the selected candidate may be permitted to register for the Ph.D. program at BITS Pilani, subject to fulfilling the requirements of the Ph.D. qualification process as per institute norms. This makes the position particularly attractive for candidates who are planning to pursue doctoral research and want to combine their research work with Ph.D. enrollment.
BITS Pilani provides an excellent research environment with state-of-the-art facilities, access to digital libraries, computing resources, and opportunities to interact with renowned faculty members. The Department of Humanities & Social Sciences at BITS Pilani is known for its interdisciplinary approach and quality research output. Working on this ICSSR-funded project will provide valuable experience and enhance the candidate's research profile significantly.
